Origin
Native to cultivated varieties in Japan, developed through selective breeding, though its genetic lineage traces to the Lophophora genus (native to arid regions of North America, such as Mexico).
Growth Requirements
Temperature: Thrives in warm, mild conditions. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 70–85°F (21–29°C); nighttime temperatures should not drop below 50°F (10°C). Protect from frost—temperatures below 40°F (4°C) can cause damage or death.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Avoid intense midday sun, which may scorch its delicate, powdery skin. A south-facing window with sheer curtains or a shaded outdoor patio (in summer) is optimal.
Soil: Requires extremely well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Use a mix of 80% inorganic materials (pumice, perlite, coarse sand) and 20% organic matter (coco coir or low-nutrient compost).
Watering: Drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry (every 2–3 weeks in summer, once a month or less in winter). Avoid wetting the plant’s body to preserve its powdery coating.
Humidity: Adapts to low to moderate humidity (30–50%). Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
