Lophophora diffusa is a rare and visually distinctive spineless cactus, highly valued by collectors for its soft, velvety appearance and pale coloration. Native to limited regions in Mexico, this species forms a flattened, globular stem with a distinctive yellow-green to sea-green hue. Its surface is divided into rounded, hump-like ribs adorned with patches of soft white woolly areoles, giving it a gentle, almost cloud-like texture.

  • Origin: Endemic to San Luis Potosí, Mexico, typically growing on arid limestone slopes or sandy ground among sparse shrubs.
  • Soil: Requires loose, well-aerated calcareous sandy loam. A soil mix with 50%-60% granular components (e.g., perlite, pumice) is recommended; avoid heavy, water-retentive clay soils.
  • Sunlight: Prefers mild light. Suitable for partial sun or diffused light in spring and autumn; strict shading is needed in summer to prevent sunburn; increase light exposure properly in winter.
  • Cold Hardiness: Low cold tolerance. When kept dry in winter, it can only withstand short-term low temperatures around 0°C. It is prone to frost damage below -2°C and must be moved to a warm environment in advance.
