Origin: Native to the Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and gravelly soils in semi-desert and fynbos habitats with seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops an enormous, woody caudex (up to 3 feet/0.9m diameter) with deeply fissured, gray-brown bark resembling a tortoise shell. Slender, twining vines reach 10-15 feet (3-4.5m) long in summer; leaves are heart-shaped, glossy green, and deciduous—dying back in winter dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth), producing small, greenish-yellow, bell-shaped flowers on separate male and female plants. Flowers are inconspicuous but add subtle charm; female plants may produce oval seed pods if pollinated.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to maintain caudex health and vine vigor. Indoor plants need a south-facing window; outdoor plants tolerate partial shade in extreme heat but prefer unfiltered sun.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Stop watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering during dormancy is the main cause of caudex rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/2 exposed above soil; choose a wide, shallow pot to showcase its tortoise shell pattern and support trailing vines.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 28°F (-2°C); protect from prolonged frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
