Lophophora williamsii  Cactus) is a small, spineless cactus deeply revered for its cultural history and unique, minimalist beauty. Native to the deserts of Texas and Mexico, it grows as a low, button-like mound with a blue-green to grayish-green stem. Its surface is divided into distinct ribs adorned with soft, fuzzy tufts of hair (areoles) instead of sharp spines.

  • Origin: Native to arid areas from southern Texas (USA) to northern Mexico, mostly growing in low-altitude grasslands, deserts, and limestone slopes.
  • Soil: Suitable for highly well-drained sandy soil. A soil mix with over 60% granular components (such as volcanic rock, Kanuma soil) is recommended. A small amount of calcareous material can be mixed in to prevent soil compaction and waterlogging.
  • Sunlight: Prefers ample sunlight. It can be kept in full sun during spring and autumn, but needs proper shading in summer to avoid sunburn. Insufficient sunlight in winter may easily cause excessive elongation.
  •
  • Cold Hardiness: When the soil is kept dry in winter, it can withstand short-term low temperatures of -4°C to -6°C. It needs to be moved indoors for warmth if the temperature stays below 0°C.
