Origin: Native to the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, adapted to rocky outcrops and dry forest margins with well-drained, gritty soils.
Growth: Develops a medium-sized fleshy underground tuber (up to 6 inches/15cm diameter). Above ground, it produces short, hairy stems; leaves are卵形 (ovate), deeply wrinkled, and dark green with fine hairs, clustering densely at stem tops and dropping in dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in spring to early summer, sending up slender stalks with clusters of soft pink to lavender tubular flowers (1-1.5 inches/2.5-3.8cm long). Flowers are delicate and charming, contrasting gently with the crinkled dark green foliage.
Light: Thrives in bright indirect light (4-5 hours daily). Tolerates mild morning sun but avoid intense midday sun to prevent leaf scorch; ideal for east or west-facing windows.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—keep soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter (dormancy); let soil dry out almost completely to prevent tuber rot.
Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of peat moss + perlite + coarse sand (2:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow pot to accommodate the tuber; ensure adequate drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.
Hardiness: USDA zones 10-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 35°F (1.7°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
