Key Characteristics

Origin: Native to the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen) and northeastern Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia), adapted to dry, rocky deserts with intense sunlight and sporadic seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a robust, swollen fleshy caudex (up to 10 inches/25cm diameter) with rough, gray-brown bark that cracks naturally with age. Woody, branching stems grow 12-20 inches/30-50cm tall, bearing glossy green leathery leaves (3-5 inches/7.5-12.5cm long) clustered at stem tips.
Flowers: Blooms in spring to summer, producing showy, trumpet-shaped flowers (2.5-3.5 inches/6-9cm wide) in vivid hues of pink, red, or white. Flowers bloom profusely on mature plants, creating a striking contrast against the thick caudex and lush foliage.

Care Guide

Light: Thrives in full intense sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to encourage caudex development and abundant flowering. Requires direct sun; indoor plants need a south-facing window with unfiltered light for healthy blooms.
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (semi-dormancy); overwatering leads to caudex rot, especially in cool conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + perlite + coarse sand (3:2:2 ratio). Choose a wide, shallow pot to showcase the caudex; plant with 1/2 of the caudex exposed above soil.
Hardiness: USDA zones 10-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 35°F (1.7°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
