Origin: Native to the Ambong Mountains in northwestern Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky montane slopes and semi-arid forests with seasonal rainfall and cool nighttime temperatures.
Growth: Develops an elongated, cylindrical fleshy caudex (up to 12 inches/30cm tall, 4-6 inches/10-15cm diameter) with grayish-green bark covered in thick, recurved spines. Short, few-branched stems emerge from the caudex top, bearing clusters of glossy green, oblong-lanceolate leaves (3-5 inches/7.5-12.5cm long) that drop in dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in late spring to summer, producing loose clusters of trumpet-shaped pale pink to white flowers (2-2.5 inches/5-6.5cm wide) at stem tips. Flowers have a subtle sweet fragrance, creating a soft contrast with the plant’s spiky caudex.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to promote caudex development and flowering. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme midday heat; indoor plants require a south-facing window for optimal growth.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter dormancy; overwatering causes caudex rot, especially in cool conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/3 exposed above soil; choose a deep, narrow pot to accommodate its elongated cylindrical shape.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
