Origin: Native to southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, South Africa’s Limpopo Province, and Mozambique, adapted to dry, rocky savannas and hillsides with seasonal rainfall.
Growth: A caudiciform succulent with a thick, spiny trunk (caudex) reaching 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5m) tall. Trunk is grayish-green, covered in sharp, conical spines;顶端 (top) bears clusters of glossy green, oblong fleshy leaves that drop in dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in summer, producing showy, trumpet-shaped white or pale pink flowers (2-3 inches/5-7.5cm wide) at the top of the trunk. Flowers are fragrant and long-lasting, adding striking color to the plant’s spiky form.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to promote trunk growth and flowering. Tolerates light shade in extreme heat but may become leggy; indoor plants need a south-facing window.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering causes root and trunk rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a deep, sturdy pot to support its thick trunk; ensure ample drainage holes.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
