Key Characteristics

Origin: Native to the central highlands of Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky montane slopes and semi-arid grasslands with cool nights and seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops an elongated, spindle-shaped fleshy caudex (up to 12 inches/30cm tall, 4-5 inches/10-12.5cm diameter) with smooth gray-green bark and sparse, short sharp spines. Slender, upright stems grow 8-15 inches/20-38cm tall, bearing clusters of narrow, glossy green leaves (2-4 inches/5-10cm long) at stem apices.
Flowers: Blooms in summer, producing loose clusters of small, bell-shaped white or pale pink flowers (1-1.2 inches/2.5-3cm wide) at stem tips. Flowers have a delicate appearance, contrasting softly with the plant’s structured caudex and foliage.

Care Guide

Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-7 hours daily) to promote caudex development and flowering. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme midday heat; indoor plants need a south-facing window for optimal growth.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering causes caudex rot, especially in cool conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a deep, narrow pot to accommodate its elongated caudex; plant with 1/3 exposed above soil.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
