A hardy member of the Euphorbiaceae family, this exceptional succulent native to East Asia (including China, Mongolia, and Russia) features a sturdy, upright growth habit with a thick, fleshy root状茎 (rhizome) that anchors it firmly in the soil and stores water for drought tolerance. Mature plants reach 30-60cm tall, with a single or a few stout stems growing from the rhizome—each stem is cylindrical, 1-2cm in diameter, with a smooth green to gray-green epidermis and subtle leaf scars from shed foliage. Its most distinctive trait is the umbrella-like inflorescence that blooms in spring: a cluster of small yellow-green cyathia (typical euphorbia flowers) forms at the top of the stem, surrounded by petal-like bracts, creating a flat-topped, umbrella-shaped floral structure. The contrast between the robust stems and delicate inflorescence adds visual interest, while the plant’s hardiness makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation in mild climates.
