Key Characteristics

Origin: Endemic to the Makay Massif in southwestern Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky montane slopes and semi-arid habitats with low, erratic seasonal rainfall and cool nighttime temperatures.
Growth: Develops a compact, spherical to oval fleshy caudex (up to 8 inches/20cm diameter) with smooth, pale gray-white bark dotted with short, stout spines. Slender, upright stems emerge from the caudex top, bearing dense terminal rosettes of narrow, glossy green leaves (2-3 inches/5-7.5cm long) that drop during extended dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth), producing clusters of small, trumpet-shaped white or pale pink flowers (1-1.5 inches/2.5-3.8cm wide) at the center of leaf rosettes. Flowers emit a subtle sweet fragrance, creating a delicate contrast with the plant’s structured caudex and lush foliage.

Care Guide

Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-7 hours daily) to maintain caudex compactness and rosette density. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme midday heat; indoor plants require a south-facing window to ensure sufficient light for healthy growth.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering is the primary cause of caudex rot, especially in cool or low-light conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use an ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant the caudex with 1/3 exposed above the soil surface to showcase its unique shape; choose a shallow, wide pot that accommodates the caudex without excessive space.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 32°F (0°C); protect from frost and relocate indoors in colder climates during winter months.
