Origin: Native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky outcrops and gravelly soils in semi-desert karoo habitats with low seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a thick, fleshy, gray-green succulent stem (up to 12 inches/30cm tall) with small, scale-like leaves that drop easily. The stem has a branching habit with a rough texture; foliage is披针形 (lanceolate) and sparse, adding to its unique architectural look.
Flowers: Blooms in spring (during active growth), producing bright yellow, daisy-like flowers on slender stalks above the stem. Flowers are showy and vibrant, contrasting sharply with the plant’s muted gray-green stems.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (5-6 hours daily) to maintain compact stem growth and flower production. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme heat but may become leggy; indoor plants need a south-facing window.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (semi-dormancy); overwatering leads to stem and root rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow, wide pot to accommodate its branching habit; ensure ample drainage holes.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
