Origin: Native to the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa, adapted to dry, gravelly plains and semi-desert karoo habitats with low seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a thick, fleshy taproot and upright, branching succulent stems (up to 12 inches/30cm tall). Leaves are pinnately divided, grayish-green with fine hairs, and cluster at stem tips—creating a textured, compact growth habit.
Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth), producing bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads on long, slender stalks. Flowers are vibrant and prominent, standing out against the plant’s muted gray-green foliage.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to maintain stem compactness and foliage color. Tolerates brief light shade but performs best in unfiltered sun; indoor plants need a south-facing window.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering causes root and stem rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow pot with drainage holes to accommodate its fleshy taproot and branching stems.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
