Origin: Native to the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky outcrops and gravelly semi-desert habitats with low and erratic seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a fleshy, tuberous root and short, stout succulent stems (up to 6 inches/15cm tall). Leaves are thick, fleshy, obovate to spoon-shaped, and blue-green with a waxy coating—clustering densely at stem tips for a compact, rosette-like appearance.
Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth), producing bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads on slender, elongated stalks. Flowers are vibrant and contrast nicely with the plant’s blue-green foliage.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-7 hours daily) to maintain its compact shape and blue-green leaf color. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme heat but may lose some foliage vibrancy; indoor plants need a south-facing window.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to very rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering easily causes root and stem rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow, small pot to fit its compact growth habit and tuberous root system.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
