Origin: A horticultural hybrid of Pachypodium brevicaule and Pachypodium densiflorum, both native to Madagascar. Inherits adaptability to dry, rocky semi-arid habitats with low seasonal rainfall from its parent species.

Growth: Develops a robust, dumpy fleshy caudex (up to 10 inches/25cm diameter) with rough gray-brown bark and dense short spines. Stouter stems than P. brevicaule emerge from the caudex, bearing clustered glossy green oblong leaves (1.5-2.5 inches/4-6cm long) that shed in dry dormancy.

Flowers: Blooms in summer, producing denser clusters of showy trumpet-shaped yellow flowers (1.8-2.5 inches/4.5-6cm wide) than its parents. Fragrant blooms contrast vividly with the spiky caudex, blooming more profusely than P. brevicaule.

Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to promote dense spine growth and abundant flowering. Tolerates light midday shade in extreme heat; indoor plants require a south-facing window for optimal growth.

Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter dormancy; overwatering risks caudex rot, especially in cool conditions.

Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/2 exposed above soil; select a shallow wide pot to highlight its compact, spiky form.

Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C), same as parent species; protect from frost and overwinter indoors in colder climates.
