Origin: Native to the southern and southwestern arid regions of Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky plains and semi-desert habitats with low, seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a tall, cylindrical fleshy trunk (up to 6-8 feet/1.8-2.4m tall) with thick, grayish-green bark covered in sharp, conical spines. At the trunk top, dense rosettes of long, narrow glossy green leaves (6-12 inches/15-30cm long) grow, which drop during extended dry periods.
Flowers: Blooms in summer to early autumn, producing large, trumpet-shaped white flowers (3-4 inches/7.5-10cm wide) in clusters at the top of the trunk. Flowers are fragrant, opening at night to attract pollinators, contrasting striking with its spiky trunk.
Light: Thrives in full intense sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to promote robust trunk growth and flowering. Tolerates no shade; indoor plants require a south-facing window with unobstructed light for healthy development.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to very rare watering in winter; overwatering causes trunk rot, especially in cool or low-light conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a deep, sturdy pot to support its tall trunk; plant with the base of the trunk slightly above soil level to prevent rot.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and relocate indoors in colder climates during winter.
