Origin: Native to the arid Northern Cape Province of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and gravelly soils in semi-desert karoo habitats with low seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a thick, fleshy caudex (up to 10 inches/25cm diameter) with a distinctive网状 (reticulate) pattern on its grayish-brown bark. Short, branching stems emerge from the caudex top, bearing small, fleshy oval leaves (0.5-1 inch/1.3-2.5cm long) that cluster densely and drop in dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in late summer to autumn, producing slender stalks with clusters of small, tubular white or pale pink flowers. Flowers hang downward, adding a delicate contrast to the plant’s robust, patterned caudex.
Light: Thrives in bright direct sunlight (5-6 hours daily) to maintain caudex compactness and bark pattern clarity. Indoor plants need a south-facing window; outdoor plants tolerate light shade in extreme midday heat but prefer full sun.
Watering: Water sparingly during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Enter dormancy in winter; stop watering entirely or mist only occasionally to prevent caudex rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/2 exposed above soil; choose a shallow, wide pot to showcase its unique reticulate bark.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
