Origin: Native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, adapted to dry, stony slopes and fynbos habitats with a Mediterranean climate of cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
Growth: Develops a thick, woody tuberous root (caudex) that grows partially above ground. Slender, branching stems reach 12-18 inches (30-45cm) long; leaves are pinnately compound, grayish-green with fine hairs, and deciduous—dropping in summer dormancy to conserve water.
Flowers: Blooms in winter (during active growth), producing clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers on slender stalks. Flowers emit a sweet, spicy fragrance that intensifies in the evening, adding a charming sensory appeal.
Light: Thrives in bright indirect to filtered sunlight (4-5 hours daily). Avoid intense midday sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage; ideal for east-facing windows or shaded outdoor spots in warm climates.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (winter-spring)—keep soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce to rare watering in summer (dormancy); let soil dry out almost completely to prevent tuber rot.
Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of peat moss + perlite + coarse sand (2:2:1 ratio). Plant tuber with 1/3 exposed above soil; choose a shallow pot to accommodate its spreading growth habit.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 32°F (0°C); protect from frost and provide shelter in colder climates during winter.
