Origin: Native to the arid southwestern region of Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky soils and spiny forest habitats with seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a massive, swollen succulent trunk (caudex) reaching 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2m) in diameter, with rough, corky bark resembling an elephant's foot. Slender branches grow 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9m) long; leaves are glossy green, pinnate, and deciduous—dropping in dry dormancy to conserve water.
Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth) with small, greenish-yellow flowers clustered at branch tips. Flowers are subtle but add understated charm; mature plants (10+ years) bloom more reliably in optimal conditions.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-8 hours daily) to promote caudex growth and foliage vibrancy. Indoor plants need a south-facing window; outdoor plants tolerate partial shade in extreme heat but prefer full sun.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter (dormancy); overwatering is the main cause of caudex rot.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Choose a deep, sturdy pot to support its massive trunk; ensure ample drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 30°F (-1°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
