Origin: Native to the Western Cape and Northern Cape Provinces of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and gravelly semi-desert habitats with low seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a fleshy, tuberous root system and trailing or semi-erect succulent stems (up to 10 inches/25cm long). Leaves are deeply lobed, bright green with a succulent texture, and cluster at stem nodes—forming a cascading, compact growth habit.
Flowers: Blooms in spring (during active growth), producing bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads on short, sturdy stalks. Flowers are cheerful and eye-catching, contrasting vividly with the plant’s lush green lobed leaves.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (5-6 hours daily) to maintain leaf vibrancy and compact growth. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme heat but may become leggy; indoor plants need a south-facing window.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter (semi-dormancy); overwatering leads to root rot.
Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of cactus soil + perlite + coarse sand (2:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow, wide pot to accommodate its trailing stems and tuberous root system.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 32°F (0°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
