Product Summary

Grown directly by local farmers and shipped straight from its origin regions, Stephania cepharantha Hayata—commonly called Yunnan Turtle Caudex—is a popular tuberous succulent prized for its large, flattened round caudex and lush palmate leaves. Drought-tolerant and easy to care for, it adds a unique tropical touch to indoor collections or warm-climate outdoor gardens. Thrives in bright light with moderate watering—ideal for both beginners and enthusiasts seeking authentic, farm-fresh block-root specimens.
Product Description
Origin: Native to mountainous regions of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou in China, adapted to well-drained soils in forest understories and rocky slopes at elevations of 600-2000 meters.
Growth: Develops a thick,扁球形 (flattened spherical) caudex (up to 12 inches/30cm diameter) that grows partially above ground. Slender, climbing vines reach 5-8 feet (1.5-2.4m) long; leaves are glossy green, palmately compound with 5-7 leaflets, forming a vibrant foliage canopy above the caudex.
Flowers: Blooms in spring to early summer with small, greenish-white flowers clustered in umbels at vine axils. Flowers are subtle but add a delicate touch, and mature plants (3+ years) bloom more profusely in suitable conditions.
Light: Thrives in bright indirect light (4-6 hours daily). Tolerates partial morning sun but avoid intense midday sun to prevent leaf burn; ideal for east or west-facing windows indoors.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter (semi-dormancy); overwatering causes tuber rot, so ensure good drainage.
Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of cactus soil + perlite + leaf mold (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/3 exposed above soil; choose a wide, shallow pot to fit its flattened shape and support climbing vines.
Hardiness: USDA zones 8-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C); in zone 8, mulch roots in winter to protect from frost.
