Origin: Native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and fynbos habitats with well-drained soils and seasonal Mediterranean rainfall.
Growth: Develops slender, fleshy green stems (up to 18 inches/45cm tall) with unique opposite, perfoliate leaves—leaves wrap around the stem, creating a "perforated" appearance. Foliage is glossy green and succulent, clustering along the stems for a lush yet compact look.
Flowers: Blooms in spring to early summer, producing bright yellow, daisy-like flower heads on thin stalks above the foliage. Flowers are cheerful and eye-catching, contrasting vividly with the plant’s green leaves and stems.
Light: Thrives in bright direct to partial sunlight (4-6 hours daily). Full sun enhances stem compactness and flowering; tolerates light shade but may produce leggier growth in low light.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter (semi-dormancy); avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of cactus soil + perlite + coarse sand (2:2:1 ratio). Choose a medium-sized pot with drainage holes to accommodate its moderate growth habit.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 32°F (0°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
