Product Description

  • Origin: Endemic to the Ngare Mara region of Kenya, East Africa, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and semi-arid savanna climates with erratic rainfall.
  • Growth: Develops a large, woody caudex (up to 12 inches/30cm diameter) at maturity, with slender vines growing 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8m) long. Foliage is palmate (hand-shaped) with glossy green leaflets; leaves drop in dry dormancy to conserve water.
  • Flowers: Blooms in summer (during active growth) with small, clusters of pale pink to lavender flowers at vine tips. Flowers are followed by tiny grape-like berries (non-edible) that add ornamental interest.
  • Light: Needs bright direct sunlight (5-6 hours daily) to promote caudex growth and foliage vibrancy. Indoor plants thrive near south-facing windows; outdoor plants benefit from full sun with partial shade in extreme heat.
  • Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to occasional misting in winter (dormancy); overwatering leads to caudex rot.
  • Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + perlite (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with the top half exposed; choose a deep, sturdy pot to support the block root’s weight.
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 10-11. Tolerates brief temps down to 35°F (1.7°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in zones below 10.
